RVA Duck Race & Festival of Inclusion at Brown’s Island August 20th

This is a new festival to coincide with the duck race. A wonderful opportunity to celebrate the autism community and the organizations that support them.

The Autism Society of Central Virginia (ASCV) is bringing a favorite Richmond event back to Brown’s Island on August 20, 2022. The ASCV will host the popular RVA Duck Race in conjunction with a brand-new Festival of Inclusion. Proceeds from the event support the ASCV’s critical programming and services for our local autism community.

*Join the Duck Race!* Participants purchase Duck Entries. With each entry, participants get one chance to win incredible prizes. More than 7,000 attendees will gather on Brown’s Island to watch the ducks float down the canal and race toward the finish line. Ducks will be sold online leading up to the event, and at the festival: www.rvaduckrace.org

*New this year!* ASCV’s Festival of Inclusion will be Richmond’s first sensory-friendly festival designed to include and accommodate individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. Through zoned areas throughout the festival, we will honor our local autism community, as well as highlight the incredible work that the ASCV and fellow local organizations do to make Richmond a more inclusive city. The festival will be held on Brown’s island from 11AM – 4 PM and will include music, family activity zones, vendors, food and so much more!

Richard Hayes is the co-founder of RVAHub. When he isn't rounding up neighborhood news, he's likely watching soccer or chasing down the latest and greatest board game.

I feel guilty picking an indoor event when looking at the forecast but that’s just the kind of rebel I am at times.

Mighty Joshua at Dogwood Dell August 13th

Mighty Joshua is some of the best reggae in Richmond. If you like reggae you should go to this free show.

Richmond Oddities & Curiosities Expo at Convention Center August 13th

I went last year and came back with some treasures. I didn’t not come back with a taxidermy jackalope because I want to remain married.

The Oddities & Curiosities Expo showcases hand selected vendors, dealers, artists and small businesses with all things weird. You’ll find items such as: taxidermy, preserved specimens, original artwork, horror/halloween inspired pieces, antiques, handcrafted oddities, quack medical devices, creepy clothing, odd jewelry, skulls/bones, funeral collectibles & much more. We truly have something weird for everyone at our shows. All items you see at our shows are legal to own and sustainably sourced.

The O&C Expo provides a safe place for anyone to come and discover new artists, meet new friends and be surrounded by an amazing community of like-minded people. We pride ourselves in being a completely “DIY” ran show from start to finish. We find so much joy in being able to provide a place where you can feel at home surrounded by others that share the same interests.

We are the first and original traveling event exclusively showcasing oddities vendors and dark artists in the country. We are a one of a kind event and the first to do what we specialize in. We take tremendous pride in this and hope to gain your support along the way.

Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival at Rockett’s Landing August 6th

I’ve always dreamed of riding the dragon. It’s not going to happen this year but at least I can watch the dragons be rowed. It’s too late to register a team but there will be plenty to watch.

Image: Richmond Dragon Boat Facebook

Regarded as the liveliest festival stop on the MLDB circuit, Richmond is always a high-energy whirlwind of community rivalry mixed with team spirit. Embraced by local community teams, many festival attendees get creative with colorful uniforms, memorable costumes, and zany tent displays in the Athletes’ Village.

Thanks to the city’s central location on the American East Coast, teams from across the eastern seaboard and beyond travel to join local crews for a fun day of dragon boat festivities on and off the water. Many out-of-towners extend their stay to discover the attractions that made Richmond one of Frommers’ Top Destinations for 2014, such as the Civil War Trails, white water rafting, local craft breweries, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 17th Street Farmers’ Market, and the Edgar Allen Poe Museum.

Races take place on a 500m course with events for Mixed, Women’s, and Open teams. Local crews battle it out for the coveted Community Championship trophy.
